Health classes explained

Rate categories: Preferred Plus, Preferred, Standard Plus and Standard—what they mean and what moves applicants between them.

Carriers use rate class to price term life. Names shift by company, but the system is standard: Preferred Plus (Super Preferred or Best), Preferred, Standard Plus, and Standard, with additional loadings for elevated risk. Tobacco users get a separate tier of classes costing more.

What underwriters look at

Height and weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, family illness before age 60, driving record, medicine history, job and hobbies, tobacco or nicotine. Top classes demand good results across almost everything; Preferred is slightly looser; Standard Plus and Standard accept stable managed conditions like controlled high blood pressure.

How to use the quote tool

Your health description maps this way: Excellent → Preferred Plus, Very good → Preferred, Good → Standard Plus, Average → Standard. Quotes use that class; underwriting confirms the final class. If uncertain, get quotes for two classes and compare; let the application settle it. Picking a rosier class will not reduce your final bill—it only makes the estimate wrong.

Susman Insurance Agency knows which carriers are friendly to certain conditions and that often counts more than the lowest rate.
