Established in 1952 and known officially as the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Training Center, a major military installation and the region's largest employer.
The Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Training Center, commonly called the Combat Center or MCAGCC, was established in 1952 on land south of Twentynine Palms. The facility began as a small training outpost but has grown into one of the largest military installations in the country, encompassing roughly 596 square miles of desert terrain. It serves as the primary training venue for the United States Marine Corps, hosting large-scale combined-arms exercises that prepare units for deployment around the world.
The base is the economic foundation of Twentynine Palms. Thousands of Marines, soldiers, civilians, and contractors work there, making the Combat Center the region's single largest employer. The presence of the base shapes the city's identity and its household composition: many families are military families with regular income and federal benefits, but also with the real risk of relocation, deployment, or the loss of the service member. The base's economic importance means that families here have a direct stake in both military readiness and in their own financial resilience.
